There are now over 2 million vapers in the UK and we’re sure that lots of them are tired of hearing all the bad press vaping gets. For anybody that wants to fact-check for themselves, we’re here to debunk some of the ridiculous myths around vaping.
The Myth: Vaping Will Give You Popcorn Lung
The Truth: This is simultaneously top of the list for every vaping skeptic and completely false. The popcorn lung myth arose out of the fact that some workers in popcorn factories caught this condition from being exposed to high levels of a chemical called diacetyl.
Diacetyl was used in a small number of e-liquids when vaping first hit the market. However, the levels of diacetyl in those e-liquids was far too low to ever cause the condition from vaping them. Regardless of this, there is no diacetyl in e-liquids made in the UK following the introduction of 2016 TPD regulations in the EU. Squashed.
The Myth: Vaping Is Worse Than Smoking
The Truth: We’re not sure how this myth came about but there is absolutely no evidence that vaping is worse than smoking. In fact, Public Health England has repeatedly stated that vaping is up to 95% safer than smoking, whilst the NHS continues to promote vaping as a way for smokers to give up cigarettes.
The Myth: E-Cigarettes Can Explode At Any Moment
The Truth: Unfortunately, there have been a number of cases where vaping devices have exploded, with some very rare examples of these explosions resulting in death. However, these cases all involved vaping devices that were either misused, not officially regulated models or had been built improperly by their users.
It is vital that people buying or building a vape device make sure that they have an officially regulated models (or parts) that have been certified by relevant UK authorities.
The Myth: Vaping Does Not Help You Quit Smoking
The Truth: Vaping has been widely accepted as a way for people to give up smoking. Why? The evidence is overwhelming. Public Health England shows that 2.5 million people in the UK vape – almost half of this number (1.2 million) quit smoking via vaping. Vaping helps many people quit smoking: it’s as simple as that.
The Myth: Vaping Produces Huge Clouds Of Vapour
The Truth: It’s true that when lots of people think of smoking, they think of somebody blowing a huge cloud of vapour. Whilst many vapers enjoy sub-ohm vaping and the ‘cloud-chasing’ style, there are plenty of other styles on offer. Vaping a PG e-liquid, for example, will produce a lot less vapour and using a pod system reduces vapour too. It’s all down to choice.
Vaping is never going to be for everyone, but for those that do enjoy it and for those that are interested in taking it up, it’s important to have the facts. So, the next time someone at the pub recites some of the myths above, you’ll have the information you need to set the record straight.
